At first glance, I was surprised to see so much color involved with a political piece- then I realized who created it. LeRoy Neiman was the "artist with the mustache" in rooms with various cultural leaders from athletes to presidents. You could find him sketching with Muhammed Ali one day and discussing illustrations with Hugh Hefner the next. Prior to his famous connections, his vibrant expressionism was recognized and acquired by many prestigious institutions. His style provided the perfect energy for sports which led to his role as the official Olympiad Artist for 5 games over 12 years. This title gave his work the visibility of millions, raising his popularity to a global scale and opening doors to more opportunities, like capturing the end of a 30-year war. The main colors featured in White House Signing of the Egyptian-Israeli Peace Treaty (aside from the flags) are green and blue tones. Although the ceremony was held on The White House Lawn, the reality of the moment was not as bright as conveyed. The politicians wore dark suits and the shrubs were more of a dark evergreen tone. I wonder if LeRoy used these colors to emphasize the peace & prosperity this moment intended to represent. A brighter palette to nod to a brighter future. This is one of the few editions signed by Former President Jimmy Carter, Former Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin, and LeRoy Neiman. With our current conflict involving Israel, Gaza, Iran, and the US, not to mention our 250th coming up, presenting this artwork today feels…cyclical.
